Description
The Behringer P2 can accept either a balanced mono or an unbalanced stereo signal using a single XLR microphone cable. This differs from the older P1 model, which required two separate XLR cables for stereo (one for Right, one for Left). The P2 uses an internal switch to allow stereo signals on a single mic cable.
A single XLR cable can be used as an unbalanced stereo connection: one wire carries the Right signal, the other carries the Left, and the shield serves as the ground. The Behringer P2 implements this to deliver a stereo mix for in-ear monitors along a single mic cable. The challenge arises when two outputs are needed to send left and right to the P2 (as opposed to a single balanced mono output).
For users connecting a stereo output pair from a mixer to the P2, the challenge lies in the cabling. Off-the-shelf solutions aren’t readily available, but a simple y-cable can be built. The cable requires two XLR female plugs connected to a single XLR male plug, wired internally as follows:
- Pin 2 XLR Female 1 – Pin 2 XLR Male.
- Pin 2 XLR Female 2 – Pin 3 XLR Male.
- Pin 3 of both XLR Female jumped to Pin 1.
- Pin 1 of both XLR Female – Pin 1 of the XLR Male.
This Y cable adapter reduces the two mono outputs left/right down to a single standard xlr cable so the that P2 can be used in stereo mode.
